2017 Linda Thompson Memorial Scholar: Daniel McMillan, Johnson & Wales University

Daniel McMillanThe Association of Destination Management Executives International is honored to administer the Linda Thompson Memorial Scholarship as a living tribute to Linda, who was such a vital part of the destination management profession and meetings industry.  As an owner of Cappa & Graham, Inc. in San Francisco, CA, and a vital force in the DMC Network, Linda dedicated herself to mentoring young professionals and raising the level of excellence in our industry. This year, 19 applications were received from individuals who are preparing for a career in destination management.

Daniel McMillan honed his interest in event planning by helping to plan his aunt’s wedding.  One year later, at age 36, his aunt died.  The last thing she told Daniel was that nothing could stop him from chasing his dreams, no matter how many barriers he had to break down to get there.

Daniel is on the Dean’s List while working full time and yet finds time to work with non-profit organizations.  In his position on the steering committee, he has held key positions in planning 8 conferences with Boys & Girls Clubs of America, with 2,000 – 20,000 international attendees. Daniel’s participation in DECA landed him first place in his public relations project in which he created a nationwide campaign for youth obesity for the Boys and Girls Clubs, which then partnered with the YMCA and Planet Fitness to start healthy eating and workouts for youth ages 8-14.

This scholarship provides $1,000 for each scholar towards their tuition. Industry professionals who want to keep Linda’s vitality an important part of the destination management industry are welcome to send their contributions to the Linda Thompson Memorial Scholarship Fund to ADMEI, 11 W Monument Avenue, Ste 510, Dayton, OH 45402, USA.
